Tre Kronor’s youth programs include internships related to maritime education, volunteer work, training in shipbuilding crafts, and integration sailing trips for at-risk youth.

The ship Tre Kronor of Stockholm

The brigTre Kronor af Stockholmis a school and passenger ship that was launched in 2005 and has been sailing since 2008. She was built in the style of a traditional 19th-century sailing ship but meets modern standards of comfort as well as all safety requirements set by the Swedish Transport Agency. During her voyages, she has visited most ports around the Baltic Sea in various contexts, always with young people on board and carrying a message about the importance of sustainability and preserving the Baltic Sea as a healthy and vibrant sea.

Staffing and Operations

The crew consists of contracted volunteers with formal qualifications and practical skills in key positions. In addition, the crew includes interns and deckhands/volunteers who sail out of personal interest and/or for educational purposes.

Leadership

Leadership is based on collaboration and personal accountability in day-to-day work, while in critical situations there is a clear hierarchy and division of responsibilities to rely on.

On board, various types of training are conducted to help young people grow and prepare future crew members for their roles. The goal is to foster confident and responsible individuals.

The principles of learning are based on helping people succeed by providing them with progressively more challenging tasks at a pace they can handle, as well as support, guidance, and, over time, greater autonomy, allowing them to begin training new participants themselves.Tre Kronoris a complex workplace with a wide range of tasks, where responsibility and collaboration are essential for its success.

The foundation of this learning experience is the sense of community that develops when dedicated people of different genders, ages, and backgrounds come together around a common goal: in this case, to sail the ship safely and to give all participants a truly wonderful experience at sea.

Sailors

Over the years, the training ship TreKronor of Stockholmhas sparked an interest in maritime careers among hundreds of young people. More than 200 have started out as deckhands and eventually earned certifications as junior seamen, seamen, Basic Safety, and so on. About a hundred have so far advanced in the profession, earning qualifications such as Master Mariner, Archipelago Skipper, and sailor. Many of “our” people—both young people and older volunteers—have also sailed on a large number of foreign sailing ships. Some well-known vessels includethe Bark Europa, Clipper Stad Amsterdam, Christian Radich, and so on. Many members of our safety crew started out as high school students aboard theT/S Gunilla of Öckerö, and quite a few others were trained on the Danish full-rigged shipsGeorg StageandDanmark.
